I ATEN'T DEAD

1 min read
Everything happens so much

Anyway, an update on everything. I have a job now, and also I'm engaged, and also I'm midway through a novel that was only conceived as a short story

no word on when anything will be done but I'm also working on a shorter piece that might be up here sooner

but yeah, still alive, still writing, things are happening over here

Okay so as the title suggests a great deal of stuff is going on here right now

Here's the bits relevant to y'all

I'm currently working on another story from the Murphyverse, which is almost done. After that is another Murphyverse story, then a couple one-shots, then back to work on either Whim or In the Company of Nightmares.

Oh, and I'm finally editing my 3rd volume of short fiction, too. Expect that sometime eventually I don't know

And finally I've also been working on some stuff that hasn't gone up on here: a world-building experiment that consists of a series of one-shots set in a consistent universe that'll eventually grow to be unlike any I've written before. The project as a whole is titled Green Company, and can be found on my tumblr:

Okay I think that's about it for now. expect stuff to go up here as and when, etc. etc.

So! It's high time I posted about everything going on right now.

In the Company of Nightmares and Whim are both coming along slowly; hopefully they'll both be done next year. The edited version of White Hart, on the other hand, is already done, and available in .docx and kindle-compatible .mobi format: 1drv.ms/1WnvH5T

The edit adds... a lot. Basically every member of the main cast gets something, whether it's depth (in the case of characters like Dalach and Oedfel) or a new character arc (in the case of characters like Giatros). Tanlin, the protagonist, gets all that and more-- basically every aspect of her has been added to in some way, and her relationship with her father is given a lot more focus. All told, it's 30,000 words longer than the first draft (available on here), and much, much better.

I've started work on assorted stuff for christmas, too; I'll definitely be posting at least four stories (Meeting the Neighbours, Suture, Swarm Season and Fixed Background), and I might be posting up to 3 more (Draco Removals and two with no title yet) if I get them done on time.

As far as actually working on stuff goes, christmas presents are currently taking my afternoon slot; once they're done, I'll switch back over to working on Whim. ITCON is, as always, an evening project. Right now I'm not actually editing anything, mostly because both volumes of short fiction in need of editing contain some very recent stuff, and I want to approach it from fresh rather than remembering all the details.

Volume 3 of the fantasy stuff will be called Always Moving Forwards; volume 1 of misc will be Tales from Dead Worlds (and will contain edits of my recent non-fantasy stuff, along with anything from the old Anthologyverse deemed worth salvaging-- including a few stories that have never been posted anywhere). Odds are my eventual second volume of misc fiction will contain mostly stuff from the Murphyverse, a setting I've been working on as of lately.

Actually, have a brief extract from Suture, the longest story (so far) in that setting:

'Whatever happened to the good old days, when they'd conveniently show up one at a time and wait for someone to show up and fight them before rushing the planet?' Caliban asked, standing up and rummaging through his wallet. 'I mean, is that really too much to ask?'

He set down several coins on the table, none of which were from Ysroc's own currency-- mostly because after only a year of circulation the Ysroc dollar had become overinflated to the point of uselessness (the end result of appointing a minister of finances who didn't actually know how money worked-- rather than going with the more traditional kind, who usually knew how to make money work for them and nobody else).

'Where'd you get euros from?' Oswego asked, surprised. 'They've been pretty rare since mainland europe went up in smoke.' This had happened half a decade ago: the European Space Agency had found the plans for a new kind of propulsion system in the Compendium, built it, and launched a test rocket that utilised it.

Moments before everything between France and Ukraine was atomised, they realised they had installed it upside down.

Caliban shrugged. 'I've no idea. Anyway, this lot enough to cover my tab?'
'Almost,' Os said. 'You still owe me for the glass-- so don't die out there.'
'Deal,' Caliban called, as he left the Well.

So, that's about it for this whole thing, I guess. Expect the usual mountain of stuff around christmas, and basically nothing at all until then.

So! I figured it's about time I talked a little about all the stuff I'm currently working on-- seeing as the last journal entry was from when I was working on Golems by Kefira, which is now long since finished (and many more things are too).

My current projects are actually all novels-- editing one (White Hart, the first draft of which is available on here) and writing two more.

The edit of White Hart introduces a few minor retcons (Wellac is now transgender, Tanlin is now intersex and has complete androgen insensitivity disorder), and expands on the theme of family: Tanlin's uneasy relationship with her father is given a little more focus as a means of further developing her character and covering the root of her trust issues in greater detail. The few children in Fort Monarch, mentioned in the original version but never shown, will appear proper, again to expand on the theme of family, and also to cover Tanlin's ambivalence towards her infertility. This is around 1/3 of the way done, and I'm hoping to be finished with it by the end of October.

my seventh novel is titled Whim, and is about a young woman who stumbles across a dieselpunk alternate reality while exploring a long-abandoned house. This is just barely novel-length as it is right now, and it's about a third of the way done. I've fallen slightly in love with the world, but I doubt I'll set anything else there for the time being-- this story will cover plenty of it, from economy to history to geography to flora and fauna to magic to... basically everything else.

Then my eighth is called In the Company of Nightmares-- this one I've been excited to write for a LONG time now. the first building blocks of it were set up WAY back in The Exchange, and Chronicle of Stone and Lost and Found both set the scene for it further. I'm only a couple chapters into this one, and it's set to be as long as my last few, but I'm enjoying it so far.

So, from the present to the future: currently planned out is a short novella titled Neutral Ground, set in my fantasy setting and dealing with the founding of Shadowport and the career of Torwyr 'Redwater' Redwood, and Elven pirate king from the days before Vasilissa Mor-Leidr ruled the Endless Sea.

I'm also gonna go ahead and reveal the titles of my next two volumes of short fiction while I'm at it. The third will collect the shorter works from my fantasy setting not in the first two, and will be titled Always Moving Forwards; the worth will collect most of my original works from outside of that setting (including several stories from the old Anthologyverse), and will be titled Tales from Dead Worlds. I haven't 100% decided on the lineup at this point, but it looks like it'll include 15-20 stories-- some of which have never been seen before by anyone but a select few.

Tales from Dead Worlds in particular is gonna take a LOT of work, given that some of the stories in it are 4 or 5 years old and are in need of edits amounting to a complete overhaul, but I'm still really excited to return to my roots and add some good-quality science fiction to my completed works.

So, it's been a while since I posted about my assorted ongoing projects-- might as well do something about that now!

I'm currently around 1/2 way through a short story titled Golems by Kefira. This one covers some of Stoneseed's implications, as well as going into the topic of Golemancy from another (more valid) angle.

After that will be another short story-- this one currently lacking a title. It'll be a dark comedy-- actually, I may as well share the first line.

"Ian Gore was used to walking into rooms with dead bodies in them; he was a coroner, after all. What bothered him was that this was a hotel room."

Odds are that one won't take more than a day or two.

Then it'll probably be a while before I actually post anything. My other ongoing projects are both novel-length: Whim is a YA(-ish) novel about adulthood that takes place in a brand new setting. I'm about 32,000 words into this so far, and it's... maybe 1/4 of the way done? We'll see.

The other novel that I'm working on is the 6th in my usual fantasy setting, titled In the Company of Nightmares. It covers a lot of ground, and answers several long-standing questions about the world as a whole.

If any of y'all want a sneak preview of either of these novels, fell free to ask!

Oh, and one final note: the edited version of White Hart is temporarily on hold until I've finished work on Whim. With a little luck, that'll be done by the end of the year.
